Non-Standard Features
This does not look like a standard phpBB2 board.
That is correct. The code used on this board was copied from another long-running phpBB2 board and modified slightly to fit our purposes. While phpbb.com always wanted to demonstrate the features of the core product, we are not under the same constraints. So we decided to have a little fun with the board.
Was everything written just for this site?
No, in fact most of the code has been written over the last six years as various tweaks or MODs were made for other boards. Every feature on this site has been designed to integrate with the other features without impacting performance.
Is there a list of the non-standard features somewhere?
Yes, you are reading it right now

General Features
Contact Form
We have a contact form on this board that can be used to contact the board moderator or administrator team. The contact form is only to be used for communications that need to be private. Abuse of the contact form may be considered grounds for banning.

The same page also includes "self service" options for a forgotten username, forgotten password, or lost activation email.

Available as a MOD? No
Not at this time. The contact form integrates with the Checkbox Challenge MOD, the Forgotten Username MOD, and the Resend Activation Key MOD. There is no intent to release this collection of MODs as a package at this time.

My Board
There is a menu option at the top of the page: My Board. This feature was inspired by the customization options available at my.yahoo or similar site options. Logged in users can use this page to remove specific forums from the index page, to permanently exclude certain forums from search results, or to subscribe to a nightly digest of forum activity.

Available as a MOD? No
This feature will not be released as a MOD at this time as the digest portion is written in perl rather than php.

Multi-FAQ
As you are reading this FAQ you may notice that there is a drop-down selector on the top-right corner of the page. This allows you to visit any of a number of FAQ pages (including this one) without having to create menu links. We use the FAQ format for our Privacy Policy as well as various other pages.

Available as a MOD? Yes
It is our intention to release this as a MOD at some future point.

Category Folding on Index Page
In addition to the My Board MOD already detailed board members and guests can opt to "fold" index categories. This option requires javascript and cookies to both be enabled for the site. A folded category will remain folded until it is opened. Note, however, that since this is cookie-based rather than part of your stored profile your settings will not follow you from computer to computer.

Available as a MOD? Yes
This MOD was released at phpbb.com some years ago and we have used it ever since. It is our intent to release this as a MOD once our MOD Catalog is open.

Forum Icons
Each category of forums has its own icon style. In fact, each individual forum could have a separate and distinct icon if needed. This fairly simple MOD uses a specific naming convention in order to keep the code simple. When a forum icon is assigned, it overrides the standard template image. The base image might be called "forum_image.gif" at which point there would be three other images that follow this naming convention:
  • forum_image_new.gif for forums with new posts
  • forum_image_locked.gif for forums that are locked
  • forum_image_new_locked.gif for locked forums that include new posts

By entering one name in the forum admin page and by following a specific naming pattern we have created a MOD that allows you to have forum-specific images that still provide a visual indication of new posts or the forum locked state.

Available as a MOD? Yes
It is our intent to release this code as a MOD once our MOD Catalog is open.

Javascript-Enabled Forms
Some of the forms on this board (like the login form, as an example) will automatically set the form "focus" by placing the cursor in the first input field. This simple but very user-friendly MOD does require javascript to be enabled.

Available as a MOD? Yes
It is our intent to release the code as a MOD once our MOD Catalog is open.

Nav Bar Icons
Favorite Topics (Bookmarks)
With a standard phpBB2 installation you can opt to "watch" a topic but that includes an email notification. Sometimes you just want to keep track of a topic without the emails. That is what this MOD is intended to do. When you bookmark a topic you can easily pull it up using the canned search option (more on that below).

You mark a topic as a favorite by clicking this icon: or remove it later with this icon: if you opt to do so. These icons are located at the top-right and bottom-right of the page while you are viewing a topic.

Available as a MOD? No
This MOD is part of our "button bar" seen at the top and bottom of each topic. By itself it is not a simple MOD. However, like many other MODs on this board it has been tightly integrated with other MODs and as such would be more difficult to release as an individual MOD.

Topic Points
Some times you find a topic to be especially helpful. If that is the case you can assign it a "point" on our board. In the spirit of "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all" you can only assign positive points. A topic with points will show up higher in search results, and will have a visual indication of total points with a signal icon like this: The more points a topic has, the more bars will be filled. The point ranges can be adjusted by the board administrators.

You can add a point to a topic by clicking this icon: or remove it later with this icon: if you opt to do so. These icons are located at the top-right and bottom-right of the page while you are viewing a topic.

Available as a MOD? Maybe
This MOD was being developed as part of the MMW (MODdings Most Wanted) program at phpbb.com. It was never finished because it started off in a different direction from what we have here. At this time we are not sure if the MOD will be released as it is being used here, or as it was under development at phpbb.com.

Send Topic to a Friend
The third new option in our "nav icon bar" is the icon you can click to send a topic link to a friend. This is a one-time email; your friend is not subscribed to updates to the topic. You can send this email by clicking this icon at the top or bottom of any topic.
Printer Friendly Format
Yet another icon on our "nav bar" is a small printer icon that looks like this: If you click this icon you can get a printer friendly version of the topic displayed in your browser.

Available as a MOD? Yes
It is our intent to write this up as a MOD separe

Topic / Post Features
Report a Post
At the bottom of each post there is a bar of icons with poster information like their online status, a link to their profile, web site, and so on. On the same line but on the very right side of the post is this icon: . Any registered user can click on that icon to report the post as a violation of board rules. You will be required to select a reason for reporting the post during the process.

As a part of handling the reported post, a moderator will have the option to close or reject your reported post. A report is closed if it was reported appropriately and handled by a moderator. If the moderator determines that the report reason was not valid, he or she may reject your report and close it. Note that rejected reports are still visible on the board. A user with more than a certain number of rejected posts will lose their ability to report posts, so please use this feature responsibly.

Available as a MOD? No
This is another case where the code is tightly integrated with other features (in this case Post Notes) that it would be difficult to pull it out and release it as a MOD. We may revisit the idea of releasing the MOD at some point in the future.

Smilies in Topic Titles
In some places on the board smilie code like :-) will render as the graphical version of . This includes search results and other topic listings like the view forum page. Topic titles that are displayed in a larger font will show the smilie code instead of the graphic due to the scale involved.

Available as a MOD? Maybe
We have not decided if this is worth releasing as a MOD or not at this time.

Latest Topics on Index
As a user profile option you can display the latest topics on the index. This feature will respect your "My Board" settings and only show you topics from forums that you have not hidden or removed from search results. The entire feature can be enabled / disabled as a user profile option. This feature is off for guests to reduce the load on the board.

Available as a MOD? No This MOD, like many others, is tightly integrated with other MODs on the board. Since we do not intend to offer the complete source code for this board as a download, it is not likely that we will release this as a MOD.

Select / Expand BBCode
This MOD was installed on our board and is from MOD author markus_petrix. We will not release the MOD here unless we get his permission to do so. We have modified it slightly so that quotes stay expanded but code segments will collapse if they are over a certain size.

Search Features
New Canned Search Options
There are a number of new canned (built-in) searches on this site. They include:
  • Recent Topics
This search returns topics in reverse order of post activity. This means that the topic with the most recent post from any forum will be listed first, followed by others in post time order. This feature will respect your "My Board" settings and only show forums that you have opted to search. There is a time limit of 48 hours for post activity.
  • New Topics Since Last Visit
This is similar to the standard search "new posts since last visit" but is more restrictive. It will only show you topics that have started since your last visit. This feature will respect your "My Board" settings and only show you topics from forums you have opted to search.
  • My Topics
This is similar to the "View My Posts" option in a standard phpBB2 installation, but it will restrict the results to topics that you started rather than showing every topic you have posted in. This can be useful for finding a topic where you have asked a question but do not remember where you posted it.
  • My Watched Topics
This search will show you every topic that you are currently watching. As an added bonus, each topic will include a checkbox. You can mark any / all topics on a page and unsubscribe to them all at once if you want.
  • My Favorite Topics
This search will show you a list of every topic that you have marked as a favorite. Like the Watched Topics output, this list will include a checkbox by each topic that will allow you to unmark multiple favorite topics at once.
  • My Point Topics
This search will list all of the topics you have assigned points to. Like the Watched and Favorite topics lists you can use the checkboxes provided to remove points from multiple topics at once if needed.

Available as a MOD? No
This MOD is tightly integrated with various other MODs on the board, including the My Board MOD, the Favorite Topics MOD, and the Topic Points MOD. At this time we do not intend to release this as a single MOD or as a package.

Multiple Forum Search
You can mark more than one forum on the search page here. In a standard phpBB2 board you can search a single forum or a single board category. With this option you can select one or more forums even if they are in different categories.

Available as a MOD? Maybe
This was never written up as a separate MOD so we do not know how difficult it might be to extract. It may show up in our MOD Catalog at some point in the future.

My Board Search Options
We have already mentioned the My Board MOD earlier in this document. This feature allows you to mark boards to be "unsearchable" which will permanently exclude them from search results. Note that a board can be "hidden" and still be "searchable"... this is by design and is not considered a bug.
Search This Forum / This Topic
While on a forum view page there will be a "Search <This Forum>" link at the top of the page. Clicking that link (requires javascript) will open a form that will let you do a quick keyword search that will automatically be limited to the forum you are viewing.

While on a topic view page there will be a "Search this topic..." link at the top of the page. Clicking that link (requires javascript) will open a form that will let you do a quick keyword search on just the topic being viewed. This is great for those really long topics that you do not have time to read from start to finish.

Available as a MOD? Maybe
We have not determined if this code will be released as a MOD or not at this time.

Profile Features
phpBB Profile Link
This field in your user profile allows you to link to your board profile at phpbb.com. Simply enter your user ID and the link will be displayed on your profile on this board.

Available as a MOD? No
This was a very simple MOD, but we have no intent to release it at this time as we don't see the need for it on other boards. If you disagree, let us know, and we will consider writing it up for our MOD Catalog.

Board Width
Our template is based on subSilver which is designed to be fluid width, meaning it will expand to fit your full window size. Some folks prefer a fixed-width board instead. This option will allow you to specific a board width. The default is Full Screen and is how guests will see the board.

Available as a MOD? Yes It is our intent to release this as a MOD in our Catalog.

Country Flags
We have been asked if this is the standard country flags MOD that has been around for years. The answer is no. To confirm that, simply click on one of the flags to see one important difference. The flag graphics have been cleaned up and recolored to match the proper country flag colors. Selecting a flag is optional, of course.

Our flag data is stored in a database to make it easy to update or add new flags. The data is also cached to avoid a query on every page that requires flag data.

Available as a MOD? Partially
It is our intent to write up the basic Flag install as a MOD and provide our flag graphics. When it is ready it will be available in our MOD Catalog.

Hide in Memberlist
Along with the standard "Hide my Online Status" we have "Hide in Memberlist" as well. This will allow you to join the board but not be displayed on the list of board members, if you opt to do so.

Available as a MOD? Yes
It is our intent to release this feature as a MOD at some point.

Post Sort Order
By default posts are sorted from oldest to newest. You always had the option to change that on the topic display, but now you can set your board preference permanently with this profile option.

Available as a MOD? Yes
It is our intent to release this feature as a MOD at some point.

View Forum Descriptions
You might be able to save a little space by removing the forum descriptions from the index page. This MOD was written at the request of one of our users on another board and we have included it here.

Available as a MOD? No
We do not believe there will be any public interest in this MOD and therefore do not have any intent to write it up.

View User Signatures / Avatars
You can opt to view or hide user signatures or avatars while browsing the board. This can be a help for boards that allow large signatures. (We do not here.)

Available as a MOD? Yes
It is our intent to release this feature as a MOD at some point.

Emoticon Format
You have the option to view emoticons or smilies as text :-) or as their graphical equivalent .

Available as a MOD? Yes
It is our intent to release this feature as a MOD at some point.

Recent Topics on Index / Recent Topic Limit
If you want a "board overview" you can opt to turn on this feature. It will display a selected number of topic links (from 5 to 20) at the top or bottom of the index page (your choice) once you have logged in. It will include topics from any forum that you have marked to search and not to hide (integration with the My Board MOD). Topics are listed in reverse chronological order by most recent post.

If you have access to private forums they will be included in your list, unless you have turned them off.

Available as a MOD? No
Because this is tightly coupled with the My Board MOD it will not be released as a separate MOD or package at this time.

Topic Activity Indicator
This option allows you to change the color of the small icon that indicates you have participated in a topic. Some folks may find the default green arrow to be too subtle, so we have provided several different color options. Note that there is no option to turn this off at this time.

Available as a MOD? Yes
It is our intent to release this feature as a MOD at some point.

Topic Preview
This feature allows you to determine whether you want a tool tip or "mouse hover" preview of the topic before you click into it. The default is off. If you turn it on, you have the choice of getting a preview of the first post or the last post in the topic.

We have seen some implementations of this MOD that add one new query for every topic displayed on the page. Our MOD does not do that. In fact, if the feature is off then it does not impact the extra post table at all. For that reason guests will not be able to use this feature.

Available as a MOD? Yes
It is our intent to release this feature as a MOD at some point.

Redirection after Posting
The standard phpBB2 option after you have posted is to send you to the post you just made. With this option you can decide that you would rather be sent to the forum instead.

Available as a MOD? Yes
It is our intent to release this feature as a MOD at some point.

Digest Options
These options control how the forum subscription or "digest" as configured by your My Board selections will be run. You can opt to get a digest only for "business days" or Monday through Friday, or you can opt for a full seven-day weekly subscription. You can set the email format as HTML or Text. Finally, if you want to retain you digest settings but want to disable the email for a period of time you can do that here as well.

Available as a MOD? No
As mentioned elsewhere, we use perl scripts to run our digest and do not intend to release this system as a MOD.
