About Us
What is this site?
The best answer to that question is on our home page. If you have not taken the time to read it, please do so.

Who is behind the phpBB2 Refugees site?
A core group of enthusiastic phpBB2 users started building this site in the middle of 2008 after the retirement was announced at phpbb.com. But ultimately the success of the site will be based on you. The more fans that we can gather in one place, the stronger the community will become.
So, is this official?
Nope. This site was founded by and provided for fans of version 2 of phpBB. It is not officially recognized or supported by the phpBB Group, nor do we expect to receive such recognition. We are completely on our own.
Why do I need you?
You might not! This site is available to you, should you want to use it. You are under no obligation to register or post on this site. If you are a fan or user of phpBB2 then we encourage you to do so. Each and every person that participates in the community makes it that much stronger.
What services do you offer?
We offer a site for fans and users of phpBB2 to continue having a place to talk and support each other.
Why here instead of <other site name here>
That is a very good question. It is our belief (and hope) that this site will grow to support phpBB2 users anywhere and everywhere with the enthusiasm formerly shown at phpbb.com. However, the success and growth of this site is completely up to the user community. If there are other sites that provide a better environment, by all means use them. You may not, however, spam them here. We deserve the same respect that you would give any other site. Thanks.
I am an enthusiast! How can I help?
First and foremost, spread the word! We want to build a community, and that is the best way you can help. As the community grows we will also be looking for team members to help manage the site. Please do not volunteer. When we are ready, we will either contact you or post a topic with a process that you can use to contact us.

Site Features
This does not look like a standard phpBB 2.x installation...
You are correct.
So why aren't you running standard code?
We are not running standard code for a variety of reasons. We are not providing a demonstration of a standard phpBB installation like they did at phpbb.com. We want to show just what can be done with phpBB2.x with a little time and extra code. We have a list of code alterations posted on the board. Note that we are not going to be providing the code used on this site as a MOD or as a download.
So where is insert your favorite MOD name here?
We want to install useful MODs, but not create a massive "pre-MODded" monster. Each MOD that we have installed has been included because it provides a function that we feel is important. The core of this code has been tweaked and tuned and is in use on several boards, one of which has nearly half a million posts.

You will probably notice that there is no "quick reply" MOD...

Since you brought it up, why not QR? and why not other MODs like subforums??
Quick Reply is probably one of the most heavily debated MODs in the history of phpBB. Suffice it to say that those that are managing this site share the same opinion as the phpBB developers. Quick Reply will not be installed here. Other MODs may be considered on a case-by-case basis and as time allows.

As a further example, we have a very simple forum structure. Because of this we decided that we do not need subforums on this board.

Hey, where are the Private Messages?
We do not have them. This is by design and will not be changed. By eliminating this feature we remove one avenue available to spammers and we ensure that conversations and support take place in public, where the entire community can benefit. If you need to contact someone or have a private conversation, please use email instead. If the member has opted to hide their email address then please respect that.

Won't it be nice to never get an unsolicited PM anymore?

Why can't I download the code used here? You have to give it away because it is GPL code...
No, actually, we do not have to do that. If we do decide to give out our code, then that package must be released under the GPL as opposed to any other license. But there is nothing in the GPL that requires us to release our code.
Is there a specific reason why you will not release the code?
Yes, several. First of all, not everyone has the experience or interest in maintaining a board this complex. Parts of our site are managed with perl rather than php. But to be honest the main reason we will not be releasing the code is we have no desire to support it. Selfish? Maybe. But that's the way it is, at least for now.

Advertising
How about advertising?
We have a server and hosting plan in place. We do not require any additional funds to manage the server at this time. If the site grows like we hope it well, then we may investigate taking on advertisers. However, we do not intend to do that until the traffic reaches 40-50GB monthly.
But I would like to advertise my services or promote my board on your site, how can I do that?
As stated above, we do not have an advertising plan in place at this time. Links to boards - whether phpBB2 related or not - will not be allowed. Obvious spammers will be banned immediately. We do not at this time intend to provide a "Show Off" forum or a phpBB2 board directory. Either or both of those decisions may be revisited at some time in the future.

General Support
I do not have a copyright on my board, can I get support?
Nope. We don't ask much, but we do require that you have a copyright on your board. Consider it as a very simple payment for the services that you might receive from this site. We don't think that it's too much to ask.

MOD Support
I got a MOD at another board that does not work.
Oops, well, that is too bad. We do not generally offer support for MODs that are not available here.
So what MODs do you have available for downloading here?
At the moment, none. We are working on some options for that. At the very least, we hope to offer MOD authors the ability to upload their code, run MOD development topics, and basically mirror the structure MOD authors enjoyed at phpbb.com.
What services will you provide to MOD authors?
Our site launch was designed to focus initially on support and discussion. As time allows we will be adding some awesome features for MOD authors as well.
Will you provide a package of MODs?
Our main support comes from the phpBB Doctor. They have been developing a MOD Package Generator for some time, and it is our hope that we will be able to use this system on our site once their MOD database is ready.
Will you install your MODs for me?
At this time we do not offer MOD installation services. However, it is on our list of items to poll the community about once we reach an appropriate size.

Style Support
What about Style Support?
More information will be available once we determine how we will be supporting 2.x styles on this site, thank you for your patience.

GPL and Copyright
I insist that you give me the source code for <insert feature here> on your site.
Nope, sorry, we don't have to do that. Please go back and read the GPL. Even if we write code based on the core phpBB code base we are under absolutely no obligation to publish that code.
