Post subject: Image association thread

My web hotel is sometimes slow, but some members of my site suspects that threads of houndreds of posts are causing it. The thread is a image association game. They show an image in their posts through bbcode, which is linked to another site and not available on the server. I have said that it could slow down things for the people that are viewing this thread, but not the server. Am I'm right?

Well, I am not an expert or anything. You'll get a more valid answear from other guys... But untill then, in my opinion, I should say that I don't see how it should affect your server, since the transfer is from the image hosting server to the members computers. I don't see any reason why the images should be first downloaded to your server... So I think you are right, the images do not affect your server. icon_wink.gif

Hi,

No the server doesn't slow down, but any delays in an image being downloaded by the browser to the users computer do slow down the loading of the page. As there will be many images on a single page all being requested from different servers it could get quite slow, especially with big images. Unavailable images will obviously never load.

er... except if there is some sort of mod - seen this before - that is attempting to build on the fly and in the php code a thumbnail for too large images icon_wink.gif.

There's one for caching remote images on the local server. Quite fascinating; I looked at it a few nights ago.

Thanks for the input! I only use one MOD in my forum and it's Easy Resize Posted Images. This MOD resizes images within the posts . Images resized are made clickable and openable in a popup in full-size. It modifies viewtopic_body.tpl.

I use it also, but I am not very satified. icon_rolleyes.gif The page becomes longer... The page only shrinks horizontally, but in vertical there are issues. Also, the picture in the new pop-up is very little... you have to click on it, and that means 2 clicks already. It's not perfect, but I do not know any better resize image MOD. icon_wink.gif
