I am tearing my hair out here!! no matter what I do I cant get things to work.
I have phpbb2.0.23 on an existing hosting, and I have got new hosting and want to move the forum to it, data and all.
what I have done
exported the database using phpmyadmin
downloaded and then uploaded to new host the phpbb2.0.23 files
created a restore folder and uploaded database, then used bigdump.php to restore/import it to the new host, its showing up in phpmyadmin
installed the php2.0.23 forum, with permissions set for config.php file
got the install screen, entered my details - does my prefix stay the same as previous install?
I then get error "An error occurred trying to update the database
Table 'phpbb_auth_access' already exists"
What am i doing wrong/have done wrong, why cant it be simple!!!!!
thanks

you have the steps sort of mixed up.
here is the proper way to do it:
1. install phpbb on the new host with a new database
2. restore your old database backup to the new one.
3. upload the new install folder again and in your browser, go to:
yourdomiain.com/yourphpbb/install/update_to_latest.php
delete the install folder again and you are done.
you will need to reset the domain name and script and cookie path in the admin panel or use the cookie MOD to do it for you.

shall I delete the database and forum files, then start again?
"you will need to reset the domain name and script and cookie path in the admin panel"
dont really understand that bit, would they relete to the old installation on the old server? the domain name has stayed the same

To parameter the cookies you can use auto cookies mod by geocator.

Have you run the auto cookie mod as suggested earlier? It is doing that for one of two reasons.
1) The domain name in the table phpbb_config being incorrect.
2) The domain not having propagated fully.
I have known occasions when the site has swapped from one server to another over a period of 24 hours with some parts of the world seeing it in the new location long before I did.

thanks Jim
How do I check your point 1?
And for point 2, I am not sure what you mean about "domain not having propagated fully", I have reinstalled website files to the hosting, and changed the nameservers on the domain for it, and it appears to be working [have deleted files from old host, only the "old" forum remains]
I havent installed a forum before, so this week and its activities have all been new to me. Installing a MOD? if it needs doing then can you talk me through what to do?
I can sense I am almost at the finishing post which in itself is an achievement for me!!
many thanks
Nik

If you do not know how to check then perhaps I just tell you how to put it right.
I have attached the auto cookie mod. Unzip it and put the install folder on your desktop.
ftp the install folder to the root of your board (where config.php is)
No with your browser go to http://yourdomain/your_forum_folder_name/install/cookie.php
Accept all suggested settings.
Delete the install folder.
Clear cache and cookies in your browser.
Close and restart your browser.

well Jim, you have made my afternoon!!
it worked! and it works!!
Now, users of my "old" forum will no doubt have set it to their favourites, currently that forum is set as "disabled" from the configuration page, apart from a link on the main site that the forum is to do with, how do I let them all know the address has changed?
A "mass" PM/Email? to members?
I have a few other questions, such as how to add another theme, will you be able to give me advice on that? perhaps by PM?
I await a reply, in the meantime I am going to change the forum link on my website then I shall post up the address for you to take a look.
many, MANY thanks!!
Nik

If you have no mods installed then download a theme of your choice and unzip the download. Inside should be a folder with the same name as the theme. Extract that folder to your desktop and then ftp the complete folder to the "templates" directory of your board.
Now go to your Admin Control Panel and find the Styles admin section. Click the link that says "Add"
Now in the right hand window you should click the install link that is alongside the theme name.
That style is now available to your users unless in General Admin>Configuration you have set that the users choice is overridden..
Why did I say easy if you have no mods?
Well without any mods you are finished - with mods you will need to apply all template edits for each mod installed to that new style if you wish the mods to be available.
For that reason it is a good idea to install all themes that you want before you start adding mods. If you use Easymod then it will install the mod to each theme you have "onboard"

thanks
forum is at www.buxtonraceway.com/forum/phpBB2/
I am just on with adding a new template now
previously, I had a list at the bottom with had all users on over last 24 hours, plus in the users section of admin, I was able to view a "user list", also there was somethign which stopped the newest member from being shown, all of these are gone now and would be the most useful to replace then that will sew everything up, maybe for another few years!! [previous bb2 was running since start of 2004!]
thanks

You need to add something such as the RAC mod to keep out the spam bots.
