Hi!
I have a medium board with 2000 users. The board is about graphics and images so we have a lot of files uploaded to the server. We use the latest version of attachment mod.
After a lot of googling and research I havent seen other people talk about this anywhere. Even on phpbb.com. The guy who coded it has a forum but it seems dead. I have 3 questions i have had hanging over me for the last months. Hope somebody can help and have some answers.
1. How many attachements is OK before the host and the board itself starts to complain? The server is a Linux, we have 10.000 attachments, 1,2gb and growing fast!
2. Is it possible to move all images from 2008 to another server/ folder and relink them in phpmyadmin? (will this help?)
3. Anybody here got experience with this? I cant be the only one.
I want to use the forum for a long time so i need some smart solutions to keep it fast and working.
Glad to see a phpbb2 support forum! This was a good idea! In my opinion locking all phpbb2 topics on phpbb.com was a big tabu!! why now leave them open and just leave them alone.. well well...
Regards,
Thomas |

You don't need atachements, you can use 1-ClickShare.com. As your forum will grow, you'll realise that you have to be careful with lost space... Forums are for discussion, not for file sharing. In my opinion, Atachement mod is one of the useless mods of all time. Also, it creates security bugs because people can upload script files to your server. |

The attachmentmod is my most important mod. As i said people use it to show their images(creations) and thats what my site is all about. Sites have different topics and needs ifo mods. "file sharing" is something else. I have implemented imageshack but the images go away and i want to keep them. Having the attachment mod is the only "safe" way and i have control over the attachments. Have fixed the security issues a long time ago .
I was wondering if anybody had experience with this. |

I would like to recommend the mod UploadPic.
I use the attachment mod for all sorts of attachments, and UploadPic for JPGs, GIFs and such.
UploadPic uses a separate folder, and includes the pic with the IMG-bbcode.
It is easy to switch toa new folder when speed is slowing down.
But it is not possible to use an external server though. |

We have a client who's site we are working on. The site uses this mod and we have found that attachment mod seems to work a bit better. _________________ http://www.jlaforums.com |

When you switch to a new folder will the linking of the old images still work?
This could be an solution.. mixing attachement mod and uploadpic.
I see you have 16031 attachments on your site. Is this uploadpic attachments? How is the speed and how many times have you switched folders? Nice site! |

I have a mix of UploadPic and Attachment Mod.
UploadPic is used for pictures only, the Attachment Mod for all types of files.
I think it is not so easy to change folder with the Attachment Mod
But with the UploadPic you just create a new folder and change the setting in the config.
I have never switched folder.
Speed is not going down yet. |

Good to know Holger! Ok then i can relax a little hehe. You guys have a lot bigger sites.
I just figgured out that there is an FTP feature in attachmentmod. That could be my solution for now but I get Code: | You are not able to use the FTP Upload Methods, because FTP Extensions are not compiled into your PHP Installation. |
That is weird because i have a bunch of other mods using FTP. Have somebody coded a fix for this? I know it is because of a setting in php on the server but my host cant open more features.
Im trying to find a fix for this with google.. |

I am also very interested in the FTP-feature. So if you find something, please let me know.
Be aware that if you use an externa server for your attachments the speed will depend on the connection and speed of the second server. That might do more harm than saving the attachments locally. |

Ok i got confirmed again that the host cant open the ftp extensions in php. Security issues.. So im back to start.
This guy coded this for phpbb3. http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=757785
Is it using the same ftp-php extensions?
Does anybody have the experiece and time to code this i am willing to pay for it.
Holger: I think i read a thread on a swedish forum that there was a way to "sync" attachments/ files so phpbb didnt even know it was placed on another server. Do you know how to do that and will it work? |

I have no idea ... sorry.
Can you find the posting in the Swedish forum again?
Otherwise, here is the legacy support for Attachment Mod:
