I've had a renewed attack on my forums in the last couple of days. I was previously using the maths question mod very successfully. I've changed this to a 3 digit number now, but it has only slowed the registrations, not stopped them.
I liked the idea of the bot prevention this forum uses, but cant find it anywhere as a released mod.
Is it available ? |

You could try this Mod:
Link.
It's the best anti-bot Mod I've come across, and lemme' tell ya': it works a treat. |

It's true the Anti Bot Question MOD is a big MOD.
I use it and am very happy with it, for several reasons.
One reason is that it is a very individualizable MOD, the way I use (pictures+questions) makes my registration page very nice.
Another reason is that it also works for guest postings.
And it works very well, not a single spam registration nor guest spam post.
But if you just want to block spam registrations in an effective way I recommend Vip Code.
By the way, the MOD used at this site is called Checkbox Challenge and I guess a copy can be found in the phpBB2 archive, MOD's in Development at phpbb dot com, author's name is Drathbun. _________________ phpBB2 will never die, I hope! |

I use bbantispam or Advanced Textual Confirmation, which is very easy to install.

The only way I have stopped spam sign ups was to use recapcha. |

Which doesn't really work with most newly-created bots.
Luckily enough, though, most of those new and fancy scripts go for PhpBB3 since PhpBB2 is shrinking in popularity. |

Nearly 3 years later.....
I finally went with a mod that asks the person not to include any profile information. If anything at all is entered into the profile information, the registration gets rejected. I also use a word input mod as a backup. Between the 2, they keep all the bots out very effectively. |

The Checkbox Challenge is working well, still, after all these years. What I have noticed is that there are some spammers getting through but from my limited research so far they appear to be humans. _________________ phpBBDoctor Blog |

Yes, there does seem to be the odd human posting spam, but if you delete them immediately, they tend not to come back.
Every now and then someone posts something that is a setup for a following spam reply, or they post something and a few days later add a spam signature, but its not often enough to be a problem.
On the other hand, my test phpBB3 forum, which I forgot I had, was found by bots and in a few days grew from nothing to 900mb of porn. So much for the "better" forum design ! |
