My forum is no longer sending out notifications, either to its members when a new reply is posted, or for a PM, and even myself as administrator when new members join etc
I have not made any changes, its just suddenly stopped!!

What error message do you get when trying to send a PM?
The PM should still go but there should be an error message generated when the email notification fails.
The email notification on new member is not standard (unless you mean you have set the approval to "admin" in the configuration.) so have you just added that mod.
Had you made any changes prior to the mail function stopping working?

Thanks but it must be a problem with my own email as I am now informed other members are getting notifications with no problems _________________ struggling |

It may be that your ISP is treating mail from your mail server as spam.
My suggestion would be to create a new email account with one of the free ones and use that account for your board mail.
I had some of my users fail to get email and it turned out to be Yahoo that was blocking mail from my mail server. The reason was that there were some redirect accounts that had been getting spam and of course my server was acting as a relay.
I had to convince yahoo that I was doing something to sort out this issue and then they unblocked it.

This problem remains
I have switched email addresses, but still no notifications to them
I can send and recieve normal email to and from them
All the other users can get notifications
I have two accounts for admin on my forum, and both are affected, cant understand why
any ideas?

Create a normal account (not admin) and use the same email address as you have for admin.
You may have to temporarily alter the admin email address as it does not usually allow the same email address to be used.
Now make a new post with that account.
Reply to it with your admin one and see if you get a notification.
If you do not then I would suspect that it is your ISP is blocking them. This sometimes happens with mail sent to "undisclosed recipients"
Do a search over on phpbb.com for those two words and I am sure you will find several topics. There was an edit that you could make to the file involved that was a work around.
Do the test first and report back.

I have created a new email address for admin on yahoo, made sure that spam settings are all off, email to email works ok, but notifications [PM, Email, reply to message] from the forum doesnt work
I have also tried with a spare normal user account that I test things with, and that isnt getting notes either, this probably means that nobody is getting notes from the forum _________________ struggling |

So which is it as the solution may well depend on which is correct.
From what you described first I would think that it is a problem created by the addition of a mod. Have you recently added a new mod and did the problem start after you had done so?
If it did then replace your backups and see if the problem is rectified.

My users cant get notifications
The back up [we] used was taken from when it all worked, at that time the forum had mods
this notification thing just stopped working recently, before the previous hosting failed, no mods or configuration changes were made, they just seemed to stop on their own accord _________________ struggling |

So have you just added a mod that may have caused it to stop?
If the mail system is working (must be if it is sending emails) then something has caused the notifier system to fail.
That can only be a mod as far as I can see.

Its not sending emails, when I refered to that I meant I can send and recieve emails successfully using my email program, to the accounts used on the forum, ie, sending an email to myself, not sending email via the forum software _________________ struggling |

This is becoming more difficult than need be as you are not giving the correct information nor answering the questions.
1) Have you just installed a mod and was it working before you installed the mod?
2) Way back I asked if you were getting any error messages - are you and if so what are they?

1, the forum did have mods but notifications worked as normal, approx 3 weeks ago and before the forum was re-installed they just stopped without any changes being made
2, no error messages at all _________________ struggling |

Ok so the thing to do is to test the mail system separate from your board.
Copy this into Notepad, enter your email address and save as mailtest.php
Code: | <?php
mail("youremail address", "Test", "This is a mail test ");
?> |
Now ftp the file to the root of your domain and then access it with your browser like:-
http://yourdomain/mailtest.php
Report back whether you get the email.

righto, have done as your said, put my email address in, saved the file as mailtest.php into the root of my domain
accessed it using my browser [nothing appears to happen, although it probably does behind the scenes]
checked my email, nothing through, checking over a period of 5 mins as I post this _________________ struggling |
