If it's on the index, it's probably the Java applet (the video player, I suppose). Has he tried with another browser?

that's not HIS error, that's the error that is on my website for all visitors, (I was just taking a stab in the dark that maybe that was his problem -

If you look at my site's index page with ie 8, it loads just fine - (the 1st time). After that, the instant you click refresh, or on anything else, there is always this error in the bottom left corner of the page - why am I getting this error, and how do I fix it? www.angling101.com
thanks

Have a look at the w3c html validator report.

I gives 485 errors and 615 warnings.

Many errors are cascading, i.e. result of earlier errors, fix one error and many others will disappear.

Fix the errors and see what happens.

Holy crap !!!

I had a look and hope this isn't over my head -

When they give an example of something wrong, do they highlight the problem in red ?

Yes, and they tell you on which line and which character, plus they give info on what might be the cause of the error.

Like in
Code:
Line 13, Column 44: "CHITOWN" is not a member of a group specified for any attribute

…meta NAME="keywords" CONTENT=""chitown, chitown-angler, chicagoland, chicagola…

On line 13 of the code, in character nº 44 there's an error.

The error is due to not having placed the keywords in between the "".

Etc.

Take your time, try fixing errors and revalidate after each change you make, that way you should be able to clean up step by step.

So in the example above, if I make sure there is a " before the 1st keyword, and " after the last keyword, that should fix that particular error?

thanks

EDIT - so I edited my overall_header and made sure the " before the 1st keyword, and " after the last keyword, and then uploaded the edited file -
Can you please see if that fixed it?

I cannot find this string anywhere?

Line 22, Column 71: NET-enabling start-tag requires SHORTTAG YES
<link rel="top" href="./index.php" title="Angling101.com Forum Index" />&#9993;
The sequence <FOO /> can be interpreted in at least two different ways, depending on the DOCTYPE of the document. For HTML 4.01 Strict, the '/' terminates the tag <FOO (with an implied '>'). However, since many browsers don't interpret it this way, even in the presence of an HTML 4.01 Strict DOCTYPE, it is best to avoid it completely in pure HTML documents and reserve its use solely for those written in XHTML.

Anyway, this is a warning, not an error.

What I usually do when I encounter errors that I don't understand is copy the error message and do an exact Google search.

Doing this with the error message you posted I found for instance this info.

What I believe the error message is trying to say is that you should remove the closing / at the end, just before the >.

But i can't find that string to edit the "/" out - it's not in my index.php, nor in my overall_header that I edited for the 1st example -

It shows in your source code (right click => view source).

Look in your overall_header to see what shows there right after
Code:
<meta http-equiv="Content-Style-Type" content="text/css">
