Post subject: moved to a new host - problem with fonts

I moved my forum to a new server, used the big dump, everything went fine except the crazy fonts:

http://www.greencyberfans.com/forum

index.html shows the fonts properly, greek fonts (on top). The actual forum from the database is the problem and shows the crazy fonts instead of the greek fonts.

Any advise on how to correct this problem would be appreciated

Go to your database with phpmyadmin.
The error is because you have the wrong Character set and/or collation.

If you still have access to your last server db then go there first to check what it should be.

Hi Jim,

I don't have access to my last server db so I've tried just about all the different collations and nothing changed!
I think it may have something to do with the way My SQL charset is set:
MySQL charset: UTF-8 Unicode (utf8)

How can I change the charset from UTF-8 Unicode (utf8) to something else?

Thank you very much for taking the time and for sending the attachment photo.

Select your database and click Operations on the top menu. Collation is at the bottom of the page.

Not doing it.. the characters do change with the different collations but I never got the right (greek) characters.
I think I'll have to change the charset from UTF-8 to something else, in my phpMyAdmin.
"MySQL charset: "UTF-8 Unicode (utf8)" (Please look at the screen shot. ). I'll have to change that if possible, I don't remember it being set as UTF-8 before, then worry about the collation.
How do i do that?

Thank you in advance

I wouldn't be surprised if you have to recreate the database, the option doesn't seem to be available elsewhere. Would make sense actually because using the wrong charset probably corrupted the content you added to the db, so you'll have to use the same clean backup on a fresh db.

You can search the Web for the best charset to use for Greek websites, I'm sure you'll find results in your language. Alternatively you'd probably get more definitive answers from the MySQL forums icon_wink.gif None of what I'm saying here is 100% sure.

Use mysqldumper for backup and restore of the DB.
Mysqldumper normally solves characterproblems by itself.

That's true Holger, I had collation problems restoring with Bigdump. Using Mysqldumper solved this issue.
