Post subject: Proof Of Concept - Use FORUM functionality on other sites

We have played with the idea of being able to offer certain functionality of a PHPBB2 forum that can be used on other regular sites.

We have been working with a test site where we were able to successfully do the following:

1. Enable test site to use Photo Gallery function which is driven by a PHPBB user's personal photo gallery on our forum.

2. Enable test site to use Bulletin function (imaging an embedded facebook wall or google buzz box, embedded twitter wall) which is driven by a PHPBB user's bulletins in the MPS system on our forum.

It seems to work quite well and is pretty seamless. We have gotten quite a few requests to have use of certain functionality of our forum due to the modifications. This seems to be the answer and there could be some interesting licensing opportunities as well. On the test site the functionality is seamless in the site (still using frames though). This was achieve doing the following:

1. Creating custom pages for desired functionality which as custom coded for the specific test site and linked to the specific PHPBB user. When that user makes updates in their personal section on the forum - update automatically appear on the test site.

Just curious has anyone played around with this sort of thing and what sort of results were you able to achieve?

The phpBB2 system is very easy to integrate, which is one of the reasons I enjoyed working with it so much. I have not had as much time to do integration projects now as I did a few years ago though.

Before my hands began to ache, I was working on a browser-based (text) RPG deployed over phpBB, using its registration, account and session management, etc. as well as fetching news posts from the forum. On the other hand, I had information from the game displayed on the forum and was planning to build a "guild" system using usergroups as a basis, so the game and the forum would have ended up deeply intertwined. Working this way saved me an awful lot of programming although it also had a few limitations.

Another idea we have been playing with is to let forum users switch between the standard forum layout for forum/topic pages and a traditional blog layout. This seems to be good for forum sections that are heavy on attachments.
