I sometimes hear from a user who has used the "I forgot my password" option and has received a new password via e-mail, but the new password does not work. I'll ask for the new password and test it myself, but it does not work. I'll manually change the user's password to that, then it works. I don't know if this happens in all cases since I wouldn't hear from anyone if there's not a problem.
Has anyone experienced this? Any idea what might cause this?
Thanks. |

I suppose we would know by now if it were a general phpBB2 error, so it's probably on your side. Can't say I know what would cause it, though.
Maybe check if the new password sent is actually the encrypted one instead of the normal one (check the database). Ask some other users to try it if you can, or test yourself with a fake account, to see if there's anything in common with the new passwords. Have them try to log in with their old password after changing it, maybe they get sent a new one but it's not saved in the db due to some error. Check your error log to see if there are missing files that get called when they do it.

Sorry, I didn't mean to suggest that it's a general phpbb2 problem. I just wondered if anyone had encountered this and had tracked it down. It's not a big deal. It doesn't happen very often and I can deal with it on a case by case basis.
Thanks. |

Is there not a time limit during which the new password is valid? If so it may be that your users change password and then leave PC only coming back, downloading emails and trying to log in after the password has expired.

I've never heard of a time limit on passwords. Is there one? Is that a configurable option in the ACP? If so, I've never seen it.
Or, is there a time limit on activating the new password using the activation link in the e-mail that's sent?
I experimented with a test user, reset the password and it worked OK.
What I suspect is that some users are just not activating the new password. Either they're overlooking this step or their e-mail addresses are no longer valid. I'd bet my own money that's what is going on here.
Thanks. |

Thought that was what I had said!!
I can't be 100% sure but I was under the impression that in order to be able to use the system generated password the activation link had to be clicked and that there was a time limit after which clicking that link would not work.

If there's a time limit, and I can't find anything about one, that might account for some cases. My experience, however, is that you can't make anything on the internet so obvious that no one will overlook it. I'm sure there are some users who receive the e-mail with the subject "New password activation" and see only the new password, then try to log in with it without reading anything else in that e-mail. Overlooking something important is very common.
Thanks. |

Sounds to me like a very reasonable assumption
Many people click faster than their eyeballs can transmit them the content of even a simple message containing no more than 10 words.
And of course, those are the first ones to blame "the system" for its shortcomings, thus making others break their heads over what's not working. _________________ phpBB2 will never die, I hope! |

To the best of my knowledge, there is no time limit (expiration date) on phpBB2 passwords. _________________ phpBBDoctor Blog |

Thanks Dave - I shall make a mental note. Not sure where I had seen that unless it was perhaps a warning that I had got when using a BB somewhere as it is not unknown for me to forget a password or two (or three)
