Is there any mod that will add a CAPTCHA (prefer RECAPTCHA) to the Login page?

Hi!
Check Anti Robotic Login Flood.
Havenīt tried this myself, just found it for you.
Please report your findings.
*Edit* Installed it myself and must say that it looks promising.

recaptcha has been broken apparently.
I still say that the RAC MOD is the best for phpbb2.
As far as I know , it has not been broken if done correctly.

Had it running on my own site for many years Robert and has held back the bots a treat. Not a single one has got through.
I have also installed it on several other sites and they reported the same.

probably at their site. however, it has been broken.
just use the RAC MOD and be done with it.
it is very simple, you create a question or just tell them to type something in the box. the bots can not read that or figure out the answers as long as you make it something that you can't google the answer for.
I always just told them to type something in the box.
ie:
type the word snizzle into the box.
or, you can tell them to type the middle four letters of:
e(e;lz into the box.
the answer would be:
(e;l
that is what you would put in the usercp_register.php file where the MOD code is this:
Code: | // RAC MOD Begin
if (strtolower($HTTP_POST_VARS['RAC']) != '(e;l') |
no bot will be able to figure that out therefore you stop them before they can even submit the registration form.

So glad to have found you all!
Let me tell you what's been working for me.. I posted this to the phpbb3 forum last night and they got a wee bit pissy - "no phpbb2 support" - hell I wasn't looking for support, just sharing with the community.. anyway here is what I posted:
I am still am running a 2.0.something version.. I have ocassional spammer registrations and sometimes they post.. once.. twice.. rarely more often than that. Its a fairly active forum.. many years ago I installed a simple MOD so every post gets sent to my email. I personally found this easier to read it all, keep up on whats going on, and catch not only the spammers posting, but stop the flame wars before they got out of hand. I also have the email validate turned on. This stops many bots from activating their account and keeps them from posting. Another thing I did was install the myVIPcode MOD and that absolutely helped. I never could get the captcha to work on that server.
When I recently moved to a new server, several things stopped working in various applications on my site. but now the captcha was working, so after getting everything else working right, I turned it on and turned off the VIP code. As someone else mentioned a few posts ago, the spammers got that one figured out and I had 20 spam/bot registrations over night. So that went off and the VIP back on.
But.. over the past several days I found I was getting upwards of 5-10 spammer/bot registratins an hour. Almost all of them never activated from the emails, they are flase email addresses and therefore they can't get the activation code, this is how I became aware of the situation with all the bounce notices. Of the ones who did manage to validate, only 1 actually posted once. We're talking maybe 200+ registrations in 2 days from these people.
Reading here got me thinking about many years ago I had a key logger thing on my PC and try as I might, change passwords daily, they were still gaining access and defacing my sites. This must be what happened here.. someone posted the VIP code to some hacker stie. A simple version of a keylogger..
Just looking now.. I had 10 spam/bot registrations between 9 & 10pm. I uploaded the changed information for the VIP code and not one in the past 20 minutes.. so that may have done the trick.. I'll change it again if I have to..
And yes.. I am in the process of upgrading to the latest version because I KNOW someone is going to have a comment about running such an old version..
ahhh and I got interuppted while typing this so another almost 10 minutes gone by and still not one false resgitration! BINGO!
FOLLOWUP.. its been well over 15 hours.. no bot registrations still.. and I lied to them.. I am in the process of developing a phpbb2 fully modified forum.. phpbb3 just doesn't work for me.. I wont bore anyone with the details
I do have the myVIPcode MOD (and many others) if anyone needs please let me know!

either someone is giving out your vip code or it is just human spammers.
I would switch over to the RAC MOD to see what happens.
bottom line is if you stop the bots with a requirement that they can not even see, much less solve, then you don't have to worry about them.

Should be working fine |
I'm not proficient at SQL and use Webmin. If I access the table called "phpbb_config" I get what's shown in the attachment. Do I use "Add field of type:" and, if so, what type? The same as the others? What about "Allow nulls?" and "Key"?
I'm handy at editing files, but not so much with SQL.
Thanks.
