Post subject: Help! I'm not able to set anyone as moderators

Hi guys!

First off, what a great place! I love my phpbb2 forum but the support is what it is nowadays. And then I found this place! Great news for me!

I'm a swedish NHL hockey fan and I'm the webmaster of a place called Pens Fans Sweden (www.pensfanssweden.com). I'm running a phpbb2 forum since 2006 and I think it's still great! But I ran across a problem the other day when I created a new forum. I couldn't se myself (or anoyone else for that matter) as a moderator. I can set it through the admin panel but it won't save, even if it says that it does. I managed to unset (is that even an english word) myself as a moderator for the other previously created forums (the three first ones) and saved, and now I can't set anyone as a moderator.

Please help!

My forum: http://www.pensfanssweden.com/forum/index.php

Thanks, guys! Any help is appreciated!

Lasse Eriksson, admin Pens Fans Sweden

Could it be that it is so long since you had to create a moderator that you have forgotten the procedure.

If you go to Admin Control Panel>>User Admin>> Management then it seems as though you can set a rank of moderator to a user. However it is just that - a simple meaningless title.

To set a user as a moderator go to Admin Control Panel>>User Admin>>Permissions and enter the username. You should then be able to set your user as a Moderator or not for each forum.

If that does not work then it is likely that you have made some change to the code that has stopped it doing so.

Jim,

I know how to set people as moderators through the admin panel but it doesn't save. It says that it's updated but it's not. But I managed to remove myself as a moderator for the old three forums, and now I can't change that back as well. =(

I have less than no experience in code changes so it seems unlikely that I managed to change that specific feature.

Thanks for your quick reply.

How about this as a work around.
Create a Usergroup called "Moderator" and then in Group permissions set that group as Moderator of each of the forums.
Now add your user to that Usergroup via the link at the top of the "Index Page".

That is how I handle the moderator ranks on my board.

I am not sure what to suggest now. It should be possible to make the changes directly in the database with phpmyadmin or what ever you use but I have never had cause to do so for my board.

Thanks for your patience Jim! I don't have phpmyadmin installed and I'm too much of a dummy to install it I'm afraid. I should have someone install it for me perhaps. Thanks anyway! Much appreciated!

It would normally be an option in your Server Cpanel (or equivalent)

I'm logged into phpmyadmin but I'm totally lost. What should I look for?

One of the "User" tables which will be towards the end of the list may contain the field that needs to be edited.
As I said I have never had to directly edit the database for the purpose of setting a user as a moderator as my system for that has always worked.
I have to go out shortly but if no one else has come on to tell you which field needs to be edited then I will take a look later today.
There may also be a field in the usergroup tables that holds a list of user ID's for membership and if you have a moderator usergroup then it should be possible to edit to add more.
Without taking a close look I can't be specific and must go out soon.

I have not had time to take a close look to see which tables need to be edited. If I get a chance tomorrow and have any success I will get back to you. There must be a table that links user ID and forum permissions - possibly phpbb_auth
Perhaps the best place to start and unravel it may be the Admin files which make up the user permissions plus the one for Usergroup permissions.
Can I suggest that you make a database backup before attempting to make any changes to the database with phpmyadmin.

Perhaps the best way forward is to try and get it to work on your board.
Try this.
Download and rename (temporarily) the file admin/admin_ug_auth.php
Now upload to the same location the attached file to overwrite the one on the server.
Test to see if the problem is resolved.
If it still does not work then rename the file you downloaded previously to "admin_ug_auth" and reupload it.
