Hey guys, what do you think about using phpBB2 in 2015. In my mind board should be small, not 100.000 users.

Why not? If I was going to set up a new board I would have no hesitation in using phpBB2.

So long you're aware you're not getting any upgrade or new mods. I'd also start from my phpBB2 premod, tbh, but that's because I know how I can fix anything in my forum.

why would you want to? phpbb3 has so many features that phpbb2 does not have. you will have to do a lot of manual code editing to MOD it.
there are no current styles available for it, etc. etc.

now I am a supporter of not upgrading if you have a long standing phpbb2 board but I really do not see any benefit from starting one that you intend to grow etc.

by the way, 100,000 members is not a small board and with that many members you will have to tweak phpbb2 in certain areas . also, finding a host that supports the older versions of php that phpbb2 requires is getting harder to do. getting phpbb2 to run on newer php versions is getting harder to do.

just so you know some of the hardships you will have with it.

good luck,
robert

I agree with lumpy. If your server's PHP version is out of your hands, you're setting yourself up for things breaking periodically and likely having to fix them yourself. There are already some changes suggested on this forum that you will probably have to make right after the install for your board to be usable. If you do control your server, however, you could reasonably install it on an older version of PHP and leave it there forever (I won't comment on how secure that would be, though).

Having current styles is becoming a fairly important issue as well considering how much you can do with HTML and CSS now and how far behind phpBB2 is on that front. There are many commodities that people have gotten or are getting used to that simply aren't there. Even if you upgrade your board to standards, you will then probably break compatibility with several mods, so you'd have to upgrade those as well.

They're all problems that can be worked around if you're willing to put in the work, but if you're just making a small board for a bunch of friends, you might just want to keep it simple and pop in a fresh install of phpBB3 on your server that will just work from the get-go. Or you could say that your members don't care about modern features and you just need a place to post text, and if you prefer phpBB2 that would be enough of an argument to keep it, with the above warnings in mind.

You might even consider installing a phpBB1.

It is the simplicity of it that I find appealing. When phpBB3 was in development stage and before release I installed it on my server and tried my best to get to grips with the permissions system but I found it very complex. With so many modifications to my own board (now has about 100 database tables) there was so much functionality I was going to lose it was a no brainer to stay with V2.
Most of my members are of an age were change is hard to make or accept (I am not too far off 70)

If it makes you feel any better, I can tell you I'm still in my 20's and the permissions system in phpBB3 is still a maze to me. I have no idea why they made it that way.

Thats why I would stay a long time on phpBB 2.x.

The same goes for other Community/Board software:
If I had to choose between vBulletin 3, 4 and 5, I would choose 3, because its complex but easy to use and understand, its long development phase and support.
And I also prefer Woltlab Burning Board 2.3.6 over 3.1 over 4.1.
