Was wondering if anyone has given any though or has any experience with the question of Jumpbox performance on server load?
I'm sure that with sites with a smaller amount of posts and/or forums, then this is probably not a factor. But what about sites with millions of posts and hundreds of forums (and subforums). On heavily traffic pages such as view topic and view forum, wouldn't the jumpbox have a significant impact on server performance especially when hundred or thousands of users a sec are hitting these pages - even if jumpbox results are cached in PHP?
Just would like to hear some opinions on this either way. _________________ http://www.jlaforums.com |

Two tips you should consider:
1. Always install a cache module into the Webserver or PHP, XCache or memcached for example, even if you have a speedy server. This is also recommend for smaller communities.
2. Try to exclude subforums from the jumpbox, only include categories and parent forums. Most of the MODs available for subforums contain instructions for adding them to the jumpbox, so you can skip the jumpbox parts. Or you disable the jumpbox at all on all pages and just use the navigation links. |

Here are some test results from a single server test using an appropriate amount of simultaneous users for the particular test box/ram/cpu and jumpbox results cached (wincache) for 500+ forums/sub forums combined. All users only hitting view topic.
*With jumpbox - average CPU load with fastcgi php and wincache - 95%
* Without - 35%
From this simple test, it seems (at least with a large amount of forums/sub forums) the jumpbox causes a huge performance hit in php - even with cached results. _________________ http://www.jlaforums.com |
