Are you trying to say that the working extension for the other program did not come out until after phpbb had adopted it?

Making it a completely fictitious extension when it was adopted??

If that is so it still leaves the extension .mod a non functioning file extension.

It still seams silly to rename a .txt file for no apparent reason.. icon_eek.gif Regardless of how Windows or any other OS for that matter handles file extensions.

What if I was to .tar a flash file and rename the extension .bar ? Then a Windows user would never figure that out now would they? Rendering it useless. icon_rolleyes.gif Or was that the point of the entire .mod thing in the first place?

It's not that I really care or anything, but it does seam a bit strange.

I really have no idea of the exact timeline of the adoption of ".MOD" for anything in particular. To me, it doesn't matter, because I rarely depend upon the extension to tell me the "type" of anything... There are too many instances in my history of computing that show that trusting a program to make that choice is either an ugly display or a damaged operating system.

To me, though, ".MOD" is more meaningful as saying it's how to do a modification, although a large number of programs disagree with that. They also disagree about it being a "JVC video" file.... How about all those people programming in Modula 2 since 1980? Or those ancient (in computer time) MultiPlan spreadsheets? Some programs register it as an audio file type, some as a play list.

My point is, just because YOUR computer tries to load JVC's program to edit videos doesn't mean the author of the file "chose the wrong extension". On my system, it loads UltraEdit. On other people's, it might load WinAMP. It just means the computer has rules that aren't correct for the situation at hand.

What makes it worse is when Windows is configured for its default, "hide extensions for known file types" mode... You won't even see what the extension is, so it doesn't matter - you'll be screwed in any case. icon_wink.gif

If it's a text file (as many phpbb 2 mods were), leave the extension as txt. Simple.

I tested that theory about windows having file extensions hidden just for fun.

It opens a txt file fine but barfs on the .mod and opens up winamp then gives a corrupted file error.

I think we should not do that here. I think sticking with .txt is a better option don't you?
