UPI2DB stores Unread Posts Information in the DB, like the option for phpBB3.
I LOVE it!
Download the package, there is an English readme included. |

What is the advantage of it storing unread posts in the database? What happens after it's read by someone? How can it clean itself up unless everyone has read it?
I think I don't understand how this works... _________________ Image link

As you know: when entering a normal phpBB2 forum, reading some topics and then the browser crashes or you have to leave the forums all topics are marked as read when you return.
This drives me crazy!
This will not happen when using UPI2DB.
Unread posts will still be marked as unread when you return.
They will be marked as read when you read the posts.
You are also able to mark a bunch of topics and mark them read at once if you are not interested in the topics. You can also mark topics and forums a permanent read if you do not want to see any topics from there. |

Oh I see what you mean. I thought you meant that it made all the unread posts themselves cached into the database some how until they were read.
I was very confused.
Yes I think I have heard of this mod before, but I didn't connect the name to it. _________________ Image link

I am interested in anything that might speed up the serving of pages and reduce server load so can anyone tell me in simple terms what the Cache_posts mod actually does? (more complicated than "It caches posts" as that bit I have understood)
What are the pros and cons of the mod as well please.

Quote: | ## Mod Description: File cache for postings to discharge the php interpreter.
## Cached posts never must be parsed by the bbcode.php thus the performance of the server is improved. |

As far as I remember - if it is the same we are talking about here - it was writing into cache files the result of a number of requests used to build some pages like index, viewforum & viewtopic, renewing them after a short delay. It wasn't a satisfying solution when I take a look at, so I didn't retained it for the Categories Hierarchy mod built-in cache system (two many io on the ftp compared to the gain versus a true static request cache system, renewed on events and not times). Note that mySQL server perform this very well by itself, so I'm not sure the gain here. |

I noticed a remarkable speedup, but I cannot give you figures! |

Thanks guys.
I am part way through installing the mod on localhost so will have a play around with it first.
When I do install it I shall ask my users if they notice any difference. If they do and I do not see any increased server loads then I will retain it. If no gains then it is easy to uninstall.

What is different then Keep Unread Flags? It sounds like it's the same... _________________ Image link

I installed the mod on the "live" site earlier today and I have to say that it seems to be doing a great job. Page generation time seems a lot faster.
Will keep you posted when some more users have commented. So far just one says he notices a marked improvement.

Same experience as I had.
The mod generates static pages out of the dynamic. |
