Hi,
I'm wondering if there are any known issues with having several (five or six) styles installed and allowing members to use whichever one they like.
For example, could it slow down page loading or cause some kind of errors, or otherwise negatively impact the forum/database?
Thanks. |

Really, no. tpl's, eg components of the style, are actually resources that are read at run time, turned into php, then executed. Having different style means having these resources taken from another directory.
However, you have to consider that any customization, or any additional tpl file, must occurs to each style you are using. That is a particular sensible point when you have to install mods that are dealing with style at a place or another. |

Okay, thanks for your reply!
I actually installed the additional templates and made the necessary changes to their files for all of the installed MODs, and tested them when I set up the forum almost two years ago. I have held back on "unlocking" the additional templates and letting people use them so far, mainly because I wasn't sure if I liked the idea of everyone seeing a different look to the forum ..and also I had my questions about it effecting performance or causing errors somehow.
I've recently been thinking again of telling everyone about them, but wanted to make sure there at least wouldn't be any technical problems with using them. |

My opinion is that one personalized template is a much better option, it gives a better identity to a board/site. _________________ phpBB2 will never die, I hope! |

I tend to agree. It's actually just the subBlack template which includes the option to add several different color schemes - so it's at least not drastically different, random themes. I'm still not sure if I'll try it or not. I might just limit it to two or three of the nicest looking colors - if I do it at all. |

any black theme/style is very hard on some people's eyes.
I would at least offer a lighter colored style for those people.

That's definitely true for me. I have serious problems trying to read dark pages, and so I have to avoid websites that use them. |

To me, dark pages are equal to bad websites.
Although I do realize that this is not true I do treat sites with dark pages as such, simply because I have a very hard time reading them. _________________ phpBB2 will never die, I hope! |

Interestingly enough, I find the dark pages MUCH easier on my eyes then the bright white ones.. _________________ Image link

That probably means that you're much younger than I am. |

Nice old man emoticon
Pages with a lot of white hurt my eyes worse than dark ones too. I keep the brightness settings for my monitor turned way down particularly to help dull the bright white pages that make my eyes feel tired faster.
I will definitely consider making a lighter style available to the other forum members though. |
