Post subject: Problems posting - General Error

Hi,
Our site is www.fishohiocanoeclub.com and since Sunday afternoon have been having a problem posting to the forum. The only thing that has been changed recently (Saturday) is that we will not let anyone who is not a member read posts. We seam to be getting this error about 80% of the time when we try to post. The post does go thru but we still get the error message. We also can't PM without getting this error. Again the error goes PM goes thru but we still get the error. We are running phpBB2.0.22.

We're getting the following error: General Error = Ran into probems sending Mail. 535 Incorrect authentication data. DEBUG MODE - line:132 - File: smtp.php.

Sorry if I'm long winded but I'm sure what all you need to know.

These are topics some of your users watch. Your smtp is not correctly set in admin control panel, probably due to the password missing. Check this part, and it should be ok.

Thanks for the help. I checked to make sure everything was correct but it still didn't work. I unchecked Use SMTP server for email and it seems to have corrected the problem. My next question is what's the difference between using the SMTP server or the local mail function? Will I have a problem with sending out activation notices to new members?

So glad you started up the Refugees site. icon_biggrin.gif I'm sure I'll be using it often.

SMTP is for server that doesn't support the mail function. If you have the mail function activated (as it seems), go with it icon_wink.gif. You can test this with setting your board to use the phpBB mailing for mails, and send you a mail through the userprofile button. If you receive it, all is ok.

Try this test as the smtp does not work when you enter what you believe to be the correct values.
Leave both the username and password blank - that is very often the correct setting believe it or not.

Do the test. If it works then you have a choice. I have found that useful when the PHP sendmail has failed. I contacted the host asking them to sort sendmail but in the meantime could swap to smtp.

Let us know if it works.

Good. It is always useful to have the smtp to fall back on should there be a problem with the sendmail.
