Your PM is sent. Look into your outbox. icon_wink.gif
Just the email anouncing the user that he has a new pm is not send, but this is a common error in phpBB2. icon_smile.gif

This is not a phpBB2 error - the system is simply reporting that the PHP sendmail is not working.

Contact your host and ask them to look into it.
If they say they have disabled sendmail then go to the Admin CP and turn on the smtp mailer. Admin P>>general admin>> configuration and near the bottom of the page.
Try leaving the username and password blank. If that fails then contact the host again and ask them what info has to be entered to use their smtp mailer.

Sorry Jim, this is new to me.

My CP shows no smtp that I can see.

I have panel headings, in each panel are icons, of :

preferences, mail, files, logs, security, domains, databases, software/services and advanced.

Any ideas please?

You are looking in the wrong place.
The Admin CP (Control panel) is accessed by the link at the bottom of each of the board "pages"
Go to the boards Admin Control Panel.
In the navigation down the left find "General admin" and under that heading you will see "configuration"
Click that link and look near the bottom of the page.
You will see an option to set the mail system to "SMTP"
The default is the PHP sendmail and the error you are getting is showing the PHP mailing system is not working.
That is nothing to do with your phpBB2 install but may be that your host has disabled the PHP sendmail. A lot are doing so to try and stop the spammers who hack in and use that system.
Check the small box to turn on the "SMTP" and try both the password and username as blank. (Enter nothing)
If that mailer does not work then you need to contact your host as a board with no mail system is dead in the water.
I guess you have not been getting new registrations either if you have the default setting of "User" for registration.

Ah I see, Jim.

Just received a PM by the guy (also spoke by phone to him earlier) to whom I tried to send 3 (attempts) and he said he'd now received them.

But I looked in the correct place icon_redface.gif as you directed and I have SMTP set to NO, a blank SMTP Server Address, my username as SMTP username and my password. I'd think I've had these settings since I started some years ago.

I'll test the PMs before I change anything in case it was just a glitch yesterday (although you'll know I guess)

I have my board set not to even show the registration "page" as I only have invited members, and I register on their behalf at first.

thanks Jim

Just changed to SMTP=YES and removed username/password, but got this :

General Error
Could not connect to smtp host : 0 : Success
DEBUG MODE
Line : 112
File : smtp.php

Although it is a bit over my head, shouldn't I have inserted a SMTP Server Address in the config?

Jim

Silly question but I inherited this forum and "accompanying website" from a.n.other who set it up. How do I find out whom my host is? The original guy whom set it up still sorts out domainnames and hosting but has nothing to do with it any longer, and is rather difficult to contact these days.

Incidentally, it's a fishing (barbel) forum and accompanies a fishing rodbuilder's website.

The reason I suggested trying the smtp without a username and password was that it usually works like that. In some cases however one is required so you must change it so that the smtp is back to "no" and it will attempt to use the default PHP sendmail.
To find the contact info for your missing guy try doing a whois on the domain.
That should tell you who registered the domain and could give you an email address or even an actual one.
You will have a problem if you can not contact the guy as the domain will eventually need to be renewed.
You should try to get him to sign the domain over to you.

He should be able to tell you who the host is (may be there in the whois info) as you need to get the PHP sendmail working.

If you do not want to divulge the domain on here then please feel free to PM me with it.

Like already stated, that problem will come and go.

Nothing you can do about it really.

The posts and PMs will still go through. Just make an announcement when/if it does it again to alert your users and you should be fine. :3

You have not done a thing but someone else has.
The likely explanation is that someone else with a site on the same server has complained to the host about the PHP sendmail not working.
They will have restarted it.
I have never had it happen with my own VPS but when I had shared hosting it was an issue, it seemed, every month or so.

Good luck with the site.

I'm not sure, but I guess there could be some limitations. For example, if there has been send 500 emails that they, could not work anymore. Like in Gmail. icon_biggrin.gif

That would have been a possibility except for one thing. The duration of the problem.
Were hosts set some sort of limit it would be one of a limit in a 24 hour period.
This problem lasted for at least 3 days.
